Mother of All Bombs Food

This post originally appeared on my friend Karen’s website, The Good Stuff Girl. Karen has moved on as a blogger and has allowed us to share some of her favorite tips and recipes. Have you tried these three healthy foods? What are your go-to Mother of All Bombs Foods?

Taking this term from my kids, these are the MOAB’s (Mother Of All Bombs) when it comes to giving your health a BIG BOOST. These are foods on which I rely on a regular basis. If you eat something regularly, you should make sure that it’s in its purest form, and brings both health and nutrients to the body.

coconut oilThere are many great foods that deliver some serious “GOOD STUFF” for your body.  But I chose these 3 as my MOAB’s.

The first BOMB, COCONUT OIL.  Holy smokin’ cow!  There are only a million things coconut oil  is good for both inside the body and topically as well.  Dr Oz shares a lot of “GOOD STUFF” regarding coconut oil. Click HERE for the article.

Here’s what I use coconut oil for in our home:

  1. High heat cooking, sometimes it makes things taste a little coconutty so I don’t cook eggs with it, but many things I do. Typically, I use it to pan fry chicken, to make homemade granola, pop popcorn, and use it when I bake.
  2. I add it to my smoothies for brain power.
  3. I use it for oil pulling. This can whiten your teeth and is naturally antibacterial.  It is wonderful for keeping the mouth clean, healing the gums, healing canker sores and for getting rid of plaque.
  4. I use it on our two dogs, Max and Taco.  Coconut oil has helped clear up scabs and cuts on them, as well as helping them with their digestion.  (It takes about 1 tsp per 10 pounds) and they love it. Click HERE to learn more.
  5. I have used it as a carrier oil when applying essential oils topically.
  6. A separate container of coconut oil sits in my bathroom and is used nightly for make-up removal, and for rehydrating after a bath or shower.  It’s a great moisturizer.  I also use it on my hair, especially during the summer.  (You do wash it out.)

This list really could go on and on.  Just like in the movie,  My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the answer to everything was “put some Windex on it”, the phrase in our house is “just put some coconut oil on it.” It is the ULTIMATE BOMB.

The second BOMB,  APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (and make sure its BRAGG’S.)

This stuff DEFINITELY is one of the MOTHER of ALL BOMBS because it contains the “MOTHER” of vinegar, a chain ofbraggs apple cider vineagar protein enzymes regarded for nutritional and health benefits. The mother is only present in raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar.  This is the floating cloudy sediment that is found within the vinegar.

It STINKS.  Yes, it does, but we quickly got over that when we realized that this stuff works!  It’s a natural heartburn remedy.  It helps with glucose levels and weight control.  Its rich in potassium.  It aids in digestion and also helps with a healthy PH balance or alkaline state for your body.

Click HERE for some cool information on ACV (apple cider vinegar).

So what do we use it for in our home?

  1. We always use ACV for marinating chicken and steaks when grilling. It’s a great meat tenderizer.
  2. I make my own dressing.  Try it mixed with olive oil, garlic and mustard.
  3. I add 2 TBSP of Apple Cider Vinegar to my HOMEMADE BONE BROTH. This helps the minerals in the bones to be extracted or leached into the broth while cooking.
  4. I have also used it for an ENERGY DRINK.  Use 8 ounces of purified water, 1-2 tsp of Braggs, ½ tsp of honey, ¼ tsp of cinnamon, and ¼ tsp of cayenne pepper.  Hold on to your hat – it’s got a kick!  (Be sure you brush your teeth afterwards as you will want to get it off of your teeth since it’s acidic.)
  5. I have also seen that is whitens my teeth like oil pulling.  Simply, combine about 2 parts of filtered water to one part of ACV and swish for about a minute.  Be sure to brush afterwards.

cup of soupThe third BOMB is what I call liquid gold or brown – BONE BROTH.  It’s considered to have great value at our house.  If it’s not an entire organic chicken from COSTCO then it’s some grass fed ox-tail bones from our local beef farmer in the crockpot.  Either way, complete goodness is in the making. My kids just know now, that when they wake up they will smelling broth endlessly cooking.  WHY?

It literally is, “BAD TO THE BONE”.

  1. I use a lot of chicken broth in general.  I make a lot of soups, and I also like the flavor it adds when cooking rice and sometimes vegetables.  I started to realize that my stomach didn’t really feel well after I ate soups, even at home.  The more I have learned about ingredients, the one BIG thing I know that makes me feel horrible and sick to my stomach with a racing heart is MSG or monosodium glutamate.  It is a flavor enhancer that is used in canned soups, crackers, meats, salad dressings, frozen dinners, BROTH, and much more.  So for me, I make my own bad to the bone broth.
  2. Why do I go to the trouble to make this?  Because the health benefits are OUTSTANDING. One of the main reasons I need this is to stop the loss of bone density and to continue to build my bones. (I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, had to go through chemo and radiation, and 5 years on Femara.  All of those treatments really give your bones a big hit.)  So, I opted for the natural route of building bones.
  3. BONE BROTH IS MY COFFEE. I like to sip it from a mug for breakfast.  I add a little bit of my favorite seasonings and a tiny pinch of Celtic salt and pepper.  It really is so relaxing and soothing. It starts my day off right.  Most days it’s just my breakfast.  I try to intermittent fast most of the time, and this helps on those days. (Dr. Mercola has a great article on intermittent fasting.)
  4. When my stomach might feel “off”, I can always consume broth to give it a rest from digesting.
  5. I try to use it anytime and every time I can as I am constantly looking for ways to BOOST OUR IMMUNE SYSTEMS at home.

So basically, there you have it…… MY 3 MOAB’s.  The above are staples in our home.  We are all familiar with them and know that typically the answer to any health question just might be….. COCONUT OIL, BRAGGS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR or BONE BROTH.  Seriously, if you don’t have one of these as your HEALTH BOMBS….. you should give them a go.
