The Caire Cleanse

A few years ago, while I was training for a half Ironman, I created “The Caire Cleanse” in an effort to decrease the inflammatory effects of endurance training on my body. The cleanse evolved after a great deal of research on the anti-inflammatory effect of specific foods. My results were amazing! I had less pain and fatigue – and a much faster recovery after long workouts.

Since then I have used this same protocol in patients with all forms of inflammation including inflammatory pain syndromes, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic fatigue, and brain fog. This cleanse can also be a great addition to a weight loss program. I call it my “secret weapon against pain and inflammation” because of the incredible results I have seen in my patients within 1-3 days of starting the program.

The program is recommended for 4-7 days out of every month (the amount of time needed to regenerate the cellular lining of your digestive tract). During the cleanse period, my green drink is recommended 2-3 times per day. I also recommend eliminating foods that are harder to digest and sometimes associated with increased inflammation. These foods include:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Processed Sugars
  • Artificial Sweeteners

Natural sugars such as fruit are acceptable in moderation.

The following foods are encouraged during the 4-7 day cleanse period:

  • All fruits and vegetables
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Salads with good natural oils (like olive or coconut oil) and vinegar
  • Dairy-free milk (flax, hemp, coconut, almond)
  • Lean animal protein such as chicken, fish, or grass-fed beef; the portion should be about the size of a deck of cards no more than once per day

After the cleanse period, it is recommended that you continue the green drink once a day. You should also continue to limit gluten and dairy.

All organic if possible. 70% green vegetables, 30% fruit. WATCH MY GREEN DRINK VIDEO and DOWNLOAD THE GREEN DRINK RECIPE AND SHOPPING LIST. Here are the basic guidelines:

Greens: Baby spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, celery (any combination as long as greens make up 70% of the total volume of the smoothie).

Fruits: Apple, pear, banana, berries, avocado, lemon juice (any combination as long as fruits make up 30% of the total volume of the smoothie).

Green Smoothie

Blend all ingredients with ice and water until a smooth, thick liquid is achieved. A smoothie that has been blended well is always better because the nutrients are more easily absorbed in your digestive tract.

One of my favorite combination of ingredients:

2 cups of ice water, 1 large handful of baby spinach, 1/3 of a head of romaine lettuce, 4 large pieces of kale, 2 sticks of celery, the juice from 2 lemons, 1 banana, 1/2 an apple, and 1/2 a pear.

A large, high-powered blender is very helpful. I like to use a Vitamix for my daily green drink. It is important that you don’t add any additional protein powder to the smoothie since it can compete with the absorption of the plant nutrients. Smoothies can be made in advance and frozen in thick glass containers.

For most patients, I recommend the following supplements and dosages during and after the cleanse period:

  • A quality probiotic (such as VSL #3, available behind the counter at most major drug stores), 50-100 billion CFU’s per day
  • A pharmaceutical-grade Omega-3 (fish oil) (such as Nordic Naturals), 2 grams per day
  • Magnesium Glycinate (other types of magnesium are not okay), 200-400mg per day
  • A quality multivitamin (such as PhytoMulti by Metagenetics)
  • Vitamin D3, 1000-5000 IU’s per day depending on individual needs

Let me know if you have any questions about the cleanse. I’d also love to hear your feedback and success stories from this or any of your other favorite cleanses. Share in the comment section below!

Everyone has different medical and nutritional needs and sensitivities. It is important to consult with your doctor before starting any new diet or supplement plan.
